This conversation text implements a dynamic, learner-centered approach that encourages students to use Spanish to resolve meaningful and emotionally charged conflicts. A carefully crafted pedagogical apparatus featuring Conversaciones creadora mini-dramas, written by renowned Spanish novelist Carmen Martín Gaite, challenges students to become active participants in the learning process.
Twelve award-winning Cortometrajes (short films) from throughout the Spanish-speaking world extend the cultural information and linguistic functions of each chapter while engaging students in a new story. Corresponding questions in the text build comprehension and elicit critical analysis.
Four thematic units now organize and unify the program. Following an introductory preliminary chapter, the units are Los viajes y el transporte (Chapters 1–3); Las familias, las amistades y la vida diaria (Chapters 4–6); La educación, la salud y los deportes (Chapters 7–9); and La cultura, los empleos y la vivienda (Chapters 10–12). This new chapter sequence follows the natural progression of experiences a student would have while living abroad.
All of the photographs in this edition are new to enhance the visual appeal of the text and to capture students' interest.
The Notas culturales have been revised and updated and cover some of the controversies of recent years. The sections on Hispanic America are longer than the ones on Spain, with specific information about individual countries.
The new Premium Website for students at www.cengagebrain.com both supports and expands the textbook. Here, students can access the chapters' audio and video resources: the new Cortometrajes and recordings of the Vocabulario básico vocabulary lists (with pauses for students to repeat what they hear), the Conversación creadora mini-dramas (first a dramatic reading of the conversation, then a second reading with pauses for student repetition), and the A escuchar interviews featuring young adults from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Puerto Rico, Madrid, and the Canary Islands). New audio flashcards and games provide improved tools for studying vocabulary. Support for the in-text Conexión Internet research activities is also here, including general resources such as links to newspapers from throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
The new Instructor's Website has been expanded and reorganized to maximize support for instructors. Each chapter's instructional materials are now grouped together for ease of use. Preliminary resources include a testing map for Latin American geography, pedagogical guides, syllabus suggestions, and evaluation rubrics. Chapters 1–12 feature detailed lesson plans, answer keys for all exercises and question sets, transcripts of the native-speaker interviews and short films, and film summaries. New to the fourth edition, a test bank with answer keys rounds out the extensive resources on the Instructor's Website.
Integration of grammar promotes resourceful use of language by presenting new Enlace grammatical review sections, correlated to the creative conversations in each chapter, which highlight and provide practice on a grammar point.
More listening practice now features listening icons highlighted in the text, which refer students to the book's Premium Website to support pronunciation, reinforce speech patterns, and promote cultural and linguistic awareness through unscripted interviews with native speakers.
Interactive task-based practice for pair and small-group work fosters creative expression.
