FUSION: INTEGRATED READING AND WRITING, Book 1 is a developmental English book for reading and writing at the paragraph level. It provides a holistically integrated reading and writing approach, making it easy for instructors to teach the basics of reading and writing in one blended course -- and showing students how the reading and writing processes are reciprocal and reinforcing. FUSION's structure highlights critical reading strategies side-by-side with the shared traits of writing, such as main idea, details, and organization, and guides students in analyzing reading to generate writing. The book teaches the types of writing that students will encounter in their future courses. Grammar instruction includes integrated, practical exercises that use high-interest professional and student models.
Updated readings: Topical, high-interest readings appear throughout the book. The anthology includes contemporary articles and essays to help provoke thoughtful discussion and writing assignments. Many in-chapter readings are refreshed to include shorter pieces with more current topics and themes.
Focus on vocabulary: While challenging words are defined, integrated vocabulary prompts in the "Reading for Enrichment" sections encourage students to practice defining words. Working in conjunction with coverage in Chapter 4, "Improving Vocabulary," on using a dictionary, content clues, and word parts, the new sections provide more in-depth vocabulary practice throughout the book.
New MindTap® digital resource: The new FUSION MindTap® includes fun engagement activities, interactive essay organizers, end-of-chapter quizzes, a video quiz library, an interactive ebook, a Test Bank that includes a mid-term and final exam, and interactive practice activities. This digital teaching and learning resource provides an engaging, personalized experience for students and instructors.
Purposeful presentation of content: The table of contents is designed to accelerate and support student progress by providing the integrated strategies, skills, and applications they need to be successful college readers and writers.
Integrated structure: Parallel reading and writing strategies are introduced in Chapter 1, "The Reading-Writing Connection," and reinforced throughout the text. Chapter 1 also introduces students to the five shared features of reading and writing assignments. This integrated guidance allows students to recognize the reciprocal and reinforcing relationship between reading and writing.
Guided practice: "Review and Enrichment" sections allow students to immediately practice reading and writing skills as they are introduced. "Reading for Enrichment" activities provide background information on the reading, prereading questions, comprehension and vocabulary questions, critical thinking activities, and relevant writing prompts.
Grammar and punctuation instruction throughout the book: FUSION integrates relevant grammar and punctuation coverage in the context of students' reading and writing assignments. Additional practice and instruction appears in the book's "Workshop" sections, which include "Real-World Application" activities that provide contextualized, practical application of grammar and punctuation skills.
Readings for writers: Part VIII offers an anthology of readings that offer critical thinking, vocabulary, discussion, and writing opportunities. The readings vary in length, demonstrate different patterns of organization, and offer unique perspectives on timely topics.
